2022 Tarot Card of the Year: The Lovers

It is very common to have questions about relationships come up in a tarot reading. Money, career, home and family, and relationships (romantic relationships in particular), are at the top of the list of questions I am asked as a reader. It makes sense. A key part of our experience as human beings is loving and being loved. We are social creatures and love is something we can’t live without. Fortunately for us all, the 2022 tarot card of the year is The Lovers. After the difficult past two years we have endured because of the pandemic (which is still far from over), The Lovers card is a most timely card to be the Card of the Year!

How The 2022 Tarot Card Of The Year Is Determined

The tarot card of the year is determined through numerology. To calculate it,we add together the single digits of the year to arrive at the total: 2 + 0 + 2 + 2 = 6. Card six in the tarot is The Lovers card (major arcana), thus making it the card for 2022.

What Is The Lovers Card?

It is one that represents love and relationships, but really is so much more than that. This Lovers card also represents balance, union, partnerships, decisions, and harmony.

The Lovers tarot card suggests that decisions of the heart are at hand. We each have decisions to make about what it means to be a good partner in relationships, who we are ultimately going to choose to move forward with, and who or what we may need to give up in order to allow the chosen relationship(s) to flourish.

This card also reminds us that we can seek divine guidance in these often very difficult choices. We have guides, guardians, and our own higher self to help us through the process.

As the 2022 tarot card of the year, The Lovers card has a lot to do not only with the relationships in our immediate circle, but also with the community at large. How do we grow and develop our relationships within our communities and overall global community? What does it mean to be a good partner in those communities? How do we balance ourselves in order to help balance the communities around us? How do we embody love and express love?

The Energies And Symbolism Of The Lovers Card In Tarot

Above the two figures in the Smith-Rider-Waite Lovers card below, we see a large angelic figure coming out of the clouds. This is the Archangel Raphael, known as the healer of mind, body and spirit, and as a Saint, is the patron of matchmaking and marriage. We call upon this angel when we are in search of a life-partner or soulmate, or when having to make an important decision about key relationships, whether romantic, platonic, in business. This includes our primary relationship–the one we have with ourselves. Archangel Raphael is also the angel of communication, and helps to balance communications between the head and the heart.

The Lovers card in this deck shows a couple standing in front of each other. The male figure is in front of a tree with flames at the tips of its branches. This is the Tree of Life. The female figure is standing in front of an apple tree with a snake coiled around its trunk with the snake’s head over the female’s right shoulder. This is the Tree of Knowledge. The image of the snake and the apples on the tree leads us to imagine this is an image of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, thereby suggesting the energy of romantic relationship.

The very tall mountain in the background represents the many challenges and /or obstacles that relationships are tasked with overcoming. The large sun filling the top portion of the card represents purity, openness and life-generating energies shining and radiating on the union and, the green ground shows the foundation is fertile and life-supporting.

What Does The 2022 Tarot Card Of The Year Mean For You?

2022 is a year of taking a close look at our relationships and assessing if they need adjusting. This includes looking at your business and work relationships as well. Examine any business partnerships that you wish to develop or end. What commitments do you wish to make, or do you need to recommit to something else? Do a deep dive into the commitments you’ve made with yourself as well. Have you kept them, or have you let some slip? Is it time to let some go, or perhaps commit to new ones? And, let’s not forget, if you are looking to find yourself in a new love relationship this year, this is a good year to put that into motion!

The 2022 Lovers Card tells us that this is an important year to reevaluate, release, heal and develop the relationships that we hold dear, wish to cultivate, and that no longer serve us.
